At Leicester Therapeutic School, we prioritise a thorough and dynamic approach to assessment, beginning with the accurate baselining of our pupils. This process includes the implementation of the phonics assessment, alongside our bespoke assessment program Pieces for Maths, English and personal and social development, which allows us to pinpoint specific areas of need and aspirational targets.
Additionally, we utilise valuable online resources such as nessy.com and Numbots to enrich our data collection, ensuring a robust understanding of each child’s learning journey. As part of our holistic approach, we also incorporate therapeutic baselines through ELSA, Lego Therapy, and assessments from Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) and Occupational Therapy (OT) where necessary.
The continuous assessment of pupil progress is an integral part of our educational framework. We employ retrieval practice and teacher-assessed work continually to inform our planning and targeted intervention strategies. In fostering a culture of reflection, students express their thoughts and feelings about their learning through visuals on each piece of work that they complete. We encourage children to challenge themselves and engage deeply with feedback.
Pupil voice is vital; we conduct regular pupil conferencing to gauge motivation levels and clarify understanding of the purpose behind their learning activities. To facilitate targeted teaching, we conduct a gap analysis using our bespoke assessment program, Pieces, which guides our immediate and future planning.
The Senior Leadership Team closely monitors pupil progress, ensuring that therapeutic assessments and interventions are effectively applied. All outcomes from these assessments are used to adapt our planning, culminating in comprehensive summative outcomes that are meticulously tracked and communicated to parents and carers at every stage of the educational process.
